To reset the PRAM on your iBook G4, shut down your computer. Then, turn it on and immediately hold down the Command (⌘), Option, P, and R keys simultaneously. Keep holding the keys until you hear the startup sound for the second time, then release them.
The iBook G4 Mid 2005 can support up to 1.5 GB of RAM. It comes with 512 MB on board and has one SO-DIMM slot that can accept up to a 1 GB module.
To perform a clean install of Mac OS X, insert the installation disc into your iBook G4, then restart the computer while holding down the 'C' key. Follow the on-screen instructions, select Disk Utility from the menu to erase the hard drive, and then proceed with the installation.
First, check the power adapter and cable for any visible damage. Try using a different power outlet. Reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) by shutting down the iBook, disconnecting the power adapter, removing the battery, and holding the power button for 5 seconds. Reinstall the battery, reconnect the adapter, and power on the iBook.
Try booting into Safe Mode by holding the Shift key during startup. If successful, check for recently installed software or updates that might be causing the issue. Also, consider running Disk Utility from the installation disc to repair the disk.
Ensure the AirPort card is installed and enabled. Click on the AirPort icon in the menu bar, select 'Turn AirPort On', then choose your wireless network from the list and enter the password if prompted.
Replacing the hard drive requires disassembling the iBook. Ensure you have a compatible replacement drive. Remove the battery, unscrew the bottom case, disconnect the hard drive connector, and carefully replace the drive. Due to the complexity, refer to a detailed guide or consider professional assistance.
The iBook G4 Mid 2005 uses a 50-watt-hour lithium-ion battery. To replace it, shut down the iBook, unplug the power adapter, slide the battery latch to unlock, and remove the old battery. Insert the new battery and make sure it is securely locked in place.
To improve performance, consider upgrading the RAM to the maximum 1.5 GB, replacing the hard drive with a faster one, and keeping the operating system and applications up-to-date. Regularly clear out unnecessary files and applications to free up resources.
Due to hardware limitations, the iBook G4 Mid 2005 may struggle with modern software. However, you can run older versions of applications that are compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard, which are supported by this machine.
