To set up your Synology DS508, connect it to your network and power it on. Install Synology Assistant on your computer, then use it to locate the DS508 and launch the DiskStation Manager (DSM) setup. Follow the on-screen instructions to install DSM and configure your device.
Ensure that the DS508 is properly connected to the same network as your computer. Check the network cables and switch ports. Restart both the DS508 and your computer. If the problem persists, try temporarily disabling your computer's firewall or antivirus software.
To expand the storage capacity, you can replace existing hard drives with larger ones. Ensure the new drives are compatible and follow the DSM’s Storage Manager instructions to replace and expand your volume without data loss.
Regular maintenance includes checking the health of your hard drives using S.M.A.R.T. tests, updating DSM and installed packages to the latest versions, and ensuring that your backup strategy is up to date and functioning correctly.
Connect the external drive to the DS508 via USB. Use the Hyper Backup app to create a backup task, selecting the external drive as the destination. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the backup setup.
Check if the device is overheating due to insufficient ventilation. Clean any dust from the vents and fans. In DSM, adjust the fan settings under Control Panel > Hardware & Power > Fan Speed Mode for optimal performance.
If your DS508 is configured with RAID, replace the failed drive with a new one. DSM will automatically begin rebuilding the volume. If not in RAID, you may need to use specialized data recovery services to attempt data recovery.
Enable QuickConnect in DSM under Control Panel > QuickConnect to allow remote access without configuring router settings. Alternatively, set up port forwarding on your router and enable DDNS for more control over remote access.
Ensure DSM is updated to the latest version. Set strong passwords for all accounts, enable 2-factor authentication, and set up a firewall in DSM. Regularly review and update user permissions and enable automatic logout for inactive sessions.
Check for high CPU or memory usage in Resource Monitor. Limit unnecessary background services and applications. Upgrade RAM if possible, and ensure that the device is not overloaded with running tasks.
