To thread the Singer 5528, start by raising the presser foot and turning the handwheel to raise the needle to its highest position. Place the spool on the spool pin, pass the thread through the thread guide, and follow the threading path indicated on the machine. Ensure the thread is securely in the tension discs before threading the needle.
First, ensure the bobbin is correctly inserted and the bobbin case is properly positioned. Check the needle to ensure it is not bent or damaged and is inserted correctly. Finally, re-thread the machine and try again.
To adjust the tension, use the tension dial located on the front of the machine. For tighter tension, turn the dial to a higher number, and for looser tension, turn it to a lower number. Test on a scrap fabric to find the correct tension setting.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the bobbin area, oiling the machine as per the user manual, and changing needles frequently. It is also important to keep the machine covered when not in use to prevent dust accumulation.
To select different stitches, turn the stitch selector dial to the desired stitch pattern. Ensure the machine is turned off while making the selection to avoid any damage.
Check if the machine is properly threaded and ensure there are no loose parts. Inspect the needle and replace it if bent. Clean the bobbin area and ensure it is free from lint or debris.
Ensure the presser foot is lowered and check the feed dogs to make sure they are engaged. If the fabric is still not feeding, try adjusting the presser foot pressure or changing the needle.
Thread bunching can often be resolved by re-threading the machine, ensuring that the thread is correctly placed in the tension discs. Also, check the tension settings and ensure the bobbin is wound properly.
The Singer 5508 uses standard home sewing machine needles. Depending on the fabric, you might use a universal needle, ballpoint for knits, or a sharp needle for woven fabrics. Refer to the manual for specific recommendations based on fabric type.
Skipped stitches can be due to a dull or bent needle, so replacing the needle is a good first step. Ensure the machine is properly threaded and that the tension is set correctly. Check that the presser foot is appropriate for the fabric type.
