The recommended oil types for the Kohler KDI2504M engine are 15W-40 for general use and 10W-30 for colder climates. Make sure to use high-quality diesel engine oil that meets API classification CH-4 or higher.
The air filter should be checked every 250 hours and replaced every 500 hours of operation, or more frequently in dusty environments. Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of the engine.
To bleed the fuel system, first ensure the fuel tank is full. Open the bleed screw on the fuel filter and manually pump the primer until fuel flows without air bubbles. Tighten the bleed screw and start the engine.
To adjust the valve clearance, remove the valve cover, rotate the crankshaft to TDC on the compression stroke, and use a feeler gauge to adjust the clearance to the specifications in the service manual.
Check for common issues such as fuel supply, battery charge, and air intake obstructions. Ensure that the fuel is fresh, the battery connections are clean and tight, and that the air filter is clean.
The recommended coolant is a mixture of 50% ethylene glycol antifreeze and 50% distilled water. This provides optimal cooling and freeze protection for the engine.
To perform a compression test, remove all glow plugs, attach a compression gauge to each cylinder in turn, and crank the engine. Compare the readings to the specifications in the service manual.
To replace the fuel filter, turn off the engine, close the fuel valve, remove the old filter, install the new filter, and open the fuel valve. Bleed the fuel system to remove any air.
Identify the source of the leak by cleaning the engine and inspecting for fresh oil. Common leak points include the oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, and oil filter. Replace faulty gaskets or tighten connections as necessary.
Routine maintenance includes regular oil and filter changes, checking and replacing the air filter, inspecting belts and hoses, and ensuring the cooling system is functioning properly. Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual.
