To perform an oil change, first ensure the engine is off and cool. Remove the oil drain plug and allow the old oil to fully drain into a container. Replace the drain plug and fill the engine with the appropriate type and amount of new oil as specified in the engine manual.
The recommended spark plug for the Kohler CH940 engine is the Champion RC12YC or an equivalent. Ensure the gap is set to 0.030 inches before installation.
If the engine won't start, check the fuel level and ensure the fuel valve is open. Inspect the spark plug for fouling and clean or replace if necessary. Verify the battery is charged and connections are secure. Refer to the manual for further troubleshooting steps.
To adjust valve clearance, first remove the valve cover. Rotate the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Use a feeler gauge to check and adjust the clearance according to the specifications in the manual. Reassemble and test the engine.
The air filter should be checked every 50 hours of operation and replaced if it shows signs of excessive dirt or damage. In dusty conditions, more frequent checks and replacements may be necessary.
The Kohler CH940 engine is designed to run on clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87. Avoid using gasoline with more than 10% ethanol content.
To winterize the engine, drain the fuel system or add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank. Perform an oil change and remove the spark plug, adding a few drops of oil into the cylinder before replacing it. Store the engine in a dry, sheltered location.
If the engine overheats, immediately turn it off and allow it to cool. Check for obstructions in the cooling fins and ensure proper airflow. Verify the oil level is adequate and inspect for leaks. Restart the engine only after resolving any issues.
To improve fuel efficiency, ensure the engine is properly maintained with regular oil changes and air filter replacements. Check tire pressures and reduce unnecessary idling. Operate the engine within its optimal load range and avoid overloading.
Regular maintenance tasks include checking and changing the oil, inspecting and replacing the air filter, checking the spark plug, inspecting the fuel system, and cleaning the cooling fins. Refer to the manual for the maintenance schedule.
