Kohler recommends using 10W-30 or 10W-40 oil for the CH745 engine under most operating conditions. For temperatures below 32°F (0°C), 5W-20 or 5W-30 is advisable.
The air filter should be inspected before each use and replaced every 100 hours of operation or annually, whichever comes first.
The correct spark plug gap for the CH745 engine is 0.030 inches (0.76 mm).
First, check the battery charge and connections. Ensure the fuel is fresh and the fuel filter is clean. Inspect the spark plugs for wear or fouling. Finally, check for any error codes using a diagnostic tool.
To adjust the valves, remove the valve cover and rotate the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke. Use a feeler gauge to set the intake valve clearance to 0.004-0.006 inches and the exhaust to 0.006-0.008 inches.
Overheating can be caused by a dirty air intake or cooling fins, low oil level, or a faulty thermostat. Clean any debris from the engine, ensure proper oil levels, and check the thermostat for proper operation.
Remove the spark plugs and connect a compression gauge to the spark plug hole. Crank the engine with the throttle open and record the reading. Repeat for each cylinder. A healthy engine should have compression readings within 10% of each other.
Before storage, change the oil and filter, clean the air filter, add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank, and run the engine for a few minutes. Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place.
To improve fuel efficiency, ensure the engine is properly tuned and maintained. Regularly clean or replace the air filter, keep the spark plugs in good condition, and use fresh, high-quality fuel.
Black smoke usually indicates a rich fuel mixture. Check the air filter for clogs, inspect the carburetor for proper adjustment, and ensure the fuel is not contaminated. Adjust the carburetor settings if necessary.
