To thread the Janome JD 1822, start by raising the presser foot and turning the handwheel to raise the needle to its highest position. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin and follow the threading guide printed on the machine, passing the thread through the thread guides, tension discs, and the take-up lever. Finally, thread the needle from front to back.
If the needle is breaking, check that it is inserted correctly and is the right size and type for your fabric. Ensure the needle is not bent or dull. Also, verify that the thread is not tangled and the bobbin is correctly inserted. Finally, make sure the presser foot is down and the fabric is not being pulled excessively.
Adjust the tension by turning the tension dial located on the front of the machine. For general sewing, the tension is usually set between 3 and 5. Test on a scrap piece of fabric to ensure the stitches are even. Increase tension for tighter stitches and decrease for looser stitches.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the bobbin area and feed dogs, oiling the machine as specified in the manual, and changing the needle regularly. It's also important to cover the machine when not in use to prevent dust accumulation. Refer to the user manual for detailed instructions.
Skipped stitches can be caused by a bent or dull needle, incorrect threading, or improper tension settings. Make sure the needle is the right size and type for your fabric and is inserted correctly. Double-check the threading path and adjust the tension as needed.
To sew buttonholes, attach the buttonhole foot and select the buttonhole stitch on the machine. Place the fabric under the foot, align the starting point, and lower the presser foot. Follow the machine's instructions to complete the buttonhole, adjusting stitch length and width as necessary.
Ensure the presser foot is down and the feed dogs are engaged. Check for lint or debris in the feed dog area and clean if necessary. Adjust the presser foot pressure if your machine model allows it. Make sure the fabric is not too thick for the machine's capacity.
To wind the bobbin, place an empty bobbin on the bobbin winder spindle and a spool of thread on the spool pin. Follow the threading path for bobbin winding, and push the bobbin spindle to the right to engage. Hold the thread end and start the machine; cut the thread after a few rotations. Stop when the bobbin is full.
For heavy fabrics, use a larger needle size, such as 16/100 or 18/110, designed for thick materials. Ensure the needle is compatible with the type of thread being used. Always test on a scrap piece of fabric before starting your project.
If experiencing tension issues, re-thread the machine, ensuring the presser foot is up during threading. Check that the bobbin is correctly wound and inserted. Adjust the tension dial gradually, testing on a scrap fabric until balanced stitches are achieved.
