To thread the Janome 405, start by placing the spool on the spool pin. Guide the thread through the thread guide and the tension discs, then down through the take-up lever. Finally, thread the needle from front to back. Refer to the manual for detailed illustrations.
First, check that the machine is threaded correctly and the bobbin is inserted properly. Ensure the needle is not bent or dull. Re-thread both the upper thread and bobbin if necessary. If issues persist, consult the troubleshooting section of the manual.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning lint and dust from the bobbin area and feed dogs. Use a soft brush or vacuum attachment. Oil the machine according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically around the hook area. Always unplug before cleaning.
Check that the thread is threaded correctly and that the tension is not too tight. Ensure you are using the correct needle and thread combination for your fabric. Also, inspect the needle for damage and replace it if necessary.
To adjust the tension, use the tension dial located on the front of the machine. For most fabrics, a medium setting is appropriate, but you may need to adjust for thicker or thinner materials. Test on a scrap piece of fabric before proceeding.
The Janome 405 is compatible with standard sewing machine needles. Use size 11-14 for light to medium fabrics and size 16 for heavier fabrics. Always consult the manual for specific recommendations.
Skipped stitches may be caused by a dull or incorrectly inserted needle. Replace the needle and ensure it is properly installed. Check that the fabric is being fed evenly and that the presser foot is down.
Place the thread spool on the pin and guide the thread through the bobbin winding tension disc. Place the end of the thread through the hole in the bobbin and place the bobbin on the winder spindle. Push the spindle to the right and press the foot pedal to start winding.
To change the presser foot, raise the presser foot lifter and release the current foot by pressing the lever on the back of the foot holder. Align the new foot and lower the holder to snap it into place.
Unusual noises can be caused by a lack of lubrication or obstructions in the bobbin area. Clean and oil the machine according to the manual. Check for any loose screws or parts, and ensure the needle is not bent.
