To thread the Janome 639, first raise the presser foot and turn the handwheel toward you until the needle is at its highest position. Place the spool of thread on the spool pin and draw the thread through the upper thread guide. Follow the threading path as indicated on the machine, ensuring the thread passes through the tension discs and the take-up lever before threading the needle from front to back.
Skipping stitches can be caused by a dull needle, incorrect threading, or incorrect tension settings. Replace the needle with a new one, rethread the machine carefully, and check that the tension settings are appropriate for your fabric type.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the bobbin area with a small brush to remove lint and dust, and oiling the machine as instructed in the user manual. Be sure to use sewing machine oil and apply it sparingly. It's also recommended to have the machine serviced by a professional annually.
Thread bunching, or bird nesting, can occur if the machine is not threaded correctly or if the bobbin is not inserted properly. Ensure the top thread and bobbin are threaded correctly and that the bobbin tension is adjusted. Also, check the upper thread tension setting.
To adjust the tension, use the tension dial located on the front of the machine. For general sewing, the tension should be set to the middle setting. Increase tension for thicker fabrics and decrease for lighter fabrics. Test on a scrap piece of fabric to ensure the tension is correct.
Needle size depends on the fabric being sewn. For lightweight fabrics, use a size 9/70 or 11/75 needle. For medium-weight fabrics, use a size 14/90 needle, and for heavyweight fabrics, use a size 16/100 needle. Always use Janome or compatible needles for best results.
To fix a jammed bobbin, first turn off the machine and remove the needle plate. Carefully take out the bobbin and clean out any lint or thread debris. Re-insert the bobbin, ensuring it is threaded correctly, and replace the needle plate.
Common error codes may include E1 for a threading issue or E2 for a bobbin problem. For E1, check that the machine is threaded properly. For E2, ensure the bobbin is inserted correctly and that there is no thread jam. Refer to the manual for additional error codes and solutions.
To change the presser foot, raise the presser foot lever and needle to the highest position. Press the presser foot release lever to remove the current presser foot. Align the new foot with the presser foot holder and lower the presser foot lever to lock it into place.
Unusual noises can be caused by a need for cleaning or oiling. Turn off the machine, clean the bobbin area, and apply sewing machine oil as recommended. Ensure that all screws and parts are tight and that the needle is not bent or damaged. If the noise persists, consult a professional technician.
