To start your Stihl MS 650 or MS 660, first engage the chain brake. Set the Master Control Lever to the cold start position. Pull the starter handle until you feel resistance, then give it a brisk pull. Once the engine fires, move the Master Control Lever to the warm start position and pull again to start the engine.
Perform regular maintenance by cleaning the air filter, checking the spark plug, sharpening the chain, and ensuring proper chain tension. Lubricate the sprocket and inspect the guide bar for wear. Regularly check fuel and oil levels.
If your chainsaw won't start, check the fuel level and ensure the fuel is fresh. Inspect the spark plug for fouling and replace if necessary. Make sure the air filter is clean and the choke is in the correct position.
Use a 50:1 ratio of unleaded gasoline to Stihl two-stroke engine oil. Ensure the gasoline has an octane rating of at least 89 and is ethanol-free if possible.
To sharpen the chain, secure the chainsaw and use a round file that matches the chain's pitch. File each cutter at the same angle and depth, and maintain a consistent number of strokes per cutter to ensure even sharpening.
If the chain keeps getting loose, check the chain tension regularly and adjust it using the tensioning screw. Ensure the guide bar nuts are properly tightened. Check for wear on the chain and sprocket.
Clean the air filter after every 5 hours of operation or more frequently in dusty conditions. Replace the air filter if it shows signs of damage or excessive clogging.
Signs of a dull chain include needing to apply more force to cut, producing fine sawdust instead of coarse chips, and smoke during cutting, even if the chain is properly lubricated.
Prevent overheating by ensuring the air intake and cooling fins are clean and clear of debris. Use fresh, properly mixed fuel and avoid running the chainsaw at full throttle for extended periods.
When storing your chainsaw, clean it thoroughly, empty the fuel tank, and run the engine until it stops to clear any remaining fuel. Store it in a dry, cool location away from direct sunlight.
