To start your Stihl MS 461, ensure the chain brake is engaged, set the master control lever to the cold start position, pull the starter rope until the engine fires, then move the control lever to the warm start position and pull again until the engine starts.
The recommended fuel mixture for the Stihl MS 461 is a 50:1 ratio of gasoline to Stihl two-stroke engine oil. Use high-quality 89-octane unleaded gasoline and Stihl oil for best performance.
If your Stihl MS 461 won't start, check the fuel level and mixture, inspect the spark plug for damage or deposits, ensure the air filter is clean, and verify that the master control lever is set correctly.
Regular maintenance for the MS 461 includes cleaning the air filter, checking and replacing the spark plug as needed, sharpening the chain, inspecting the guide bar, and cleaning the cooling fins.
To sharpen the chain, use a round file that matches the chain's pitch, maintaining the correct angles and filing each cutter evenly. Consider using a filing guide for consistency.
If the chain is not rotating properly, check that the chain brake is disengaged, inspect the clutch for wear or damage, and ensure the chain tension is adjusted correctly.
To adjust the carburetor, locate the three adjustment screws marked L, H, and LA. Use a screwdriver to adjust the low-speed (L) and high-speed (H) screws for proper engine performance, and adjust the idle speed (LA) screw to ensure the chain does not move at idle.
When using the MS 461, always wear appropriate safety gear, maintain a firm grip on the saw, be aware of your surroundings, particularly of any potential kickback situations, and never operate the saw above shoulder height.
To clean the air filter, remove the top cover, take out the air filter, and gently clean it with compressed air or wash it with warm soapy water. Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.
If your chainsaw is overheating, ensure the cooling fins are clear of debris, check the air filter for clogs, verify the fuel mixture is correct, and ensure the chain is properly lubricated and tensioned.
