To start the Stihl MS 460 Magnum Rescue chainsaw, first ensure that the chain brake is engaged. Move the Master Control Lever to the cold start position. Pull the starter grip until the engine fires briefly, then set the Master Control Lever to the warm start position and pull the starter grip again until the engine runs.
The Stihl MS 460 Magnum Rescue requires a 50:1 fuel mix, which is 50 parts gasoline to 1 part two-stroke engine oil. Use high-quality unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89 and a premium two-stroke oil.
If the chainsaw does not start, check the fuel tank to ensure there is fuel. Verify the spark plug is clean and properly gapped. Check the air filter for clogs and clean or replace if necessary. Ensure the Master Control Lever is set correctly, and inspect the starter cord for damage.
To maintain proper chain tension, ensure the chainsaw is off and the chain brake is disengaged. Loosen the nuts on the sprocket cover slightly, adjust the chain tension screw until the chain fits snugly against the guide bar but can still be pulled around by hand, then retighten the nuts securely.
The air filter should be checked and cleaned after every 10 hours of operation, or more frequently in dusty conditions. Use a soft brush to remove dirt and debris, and replace the filter if it is damaged or excessively dirty.
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as ear protection, goggles, gloves, and chainsaw chaps. Ensure the work area is clear of obstructions and maintain a firm grip with both hands on the saw. Be aware of the kickback zone and use the chain brake effectively.
To sharpen the chain, secure the saw in a vice and use a round file that matches the chain's specifications. File each cutter with firm, even strokes at the correct angle. Ensure all cutters are filed to the same length and check the depth gauges as well.
If the engine loses power, check the air filter and clean or replace it if necessary. Inspect the fuel filter for blockages and ensure the fuel tank is filled with fresh fuel. Also, check the spark plug for fouling and replace if needed.
To store the chainsaw, clean it thoroughly and remove any debris. Empty the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops to clear the carburetor. Apply a thin layer of oil to the bar and chain to prevent rust, and store the saw in a dry, secure place.
Routinely check and clean the air filter, inspect the spark plug, and keep the chain sharp and properly tensioned. Lubricate the bar and chain regularly, and inspect the fuel and oil lines for leaks. Perform a thorough inspection after each use.
