To start a Stihl MS 460, ensure the chain brake is engaged, set the master control lever to the cold start position, pull the starter rope until the engine fires briefly, then move the control to the warm start position and pull again to start the engine.
The Stihl MS 460 requires a 50:1 fuel mixture, which is 50 parts gasoline to 1 part high-quality 2-stroke engine oil.
If the chainsaw stalls, check the air filter for blockages, ensure the fuel is fresh and correctly mixed, and inspect the spark plug for wear or fouling.
Clean the air filter after every 10 hours of operation or more frequently in dusty conditions to ensure optimal performance.
To adjust the carburetor, locate the H, L, and LA screws. Adjust the L screw for low speed and idle, the H screw for high-speed performance, and the LA screw for idle speed. Adjustments should be made carefully and according to the user manual.
Regularly inspect the bar for wear, clean the oil holes, and ensure the chain is sharp and correctly tensioned. Also, flip the bar periodically to promote even wear.
Use a round file and file guide to sharpen each cutter at a consistent angle. File away from your body and keep the file level with the top plate of the cutter.
Check the fuel level, spark plug condition, and air filter. Ensure the choke is in the correct position, and the engine switch is on. If the issue persists, consult a professional for further inspection.
Regular maintenance, including cleaning the air filter, checking the spark plug, and ensuring correct fuel mixture, can significantly enhance performance. Consider professional servicing for carburetor tuning.
Overheating may be caused by a clogged air filter, incorrect fuel mixture, or insufficient lubrication. Ensure proper ventilation and check the chain oil level regularly.
