To start the Stihl MS 440, set the master control level to the cold start position, pull the starter rope until the engine fires, then move the control to the warm start position and pull again until the engine starts.
The Stihl MS 440 requires a 50:1 fuel mix ratio, which means mixing 2.6 ounces of two-stroke engine oil with one gallon of gasoline.
If the chainsaw won't start, check the fuel level, ensure the spark plug is clean and functional, inspect the air filter for clogs, and confirm that the carburetor is properly adjusted.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the air filter, checking the chain tension, sharpening the chain, inspecting the spark plug, and ensuring the bar and chain oil reservoir is topped up.
To tension the chain, first loosen the bar nuts slightly, then use the tensioning screw to adjust the chain until it fits snugly against the bottom of the guide bar, allowing slight movement by hand.
If the chain is not cutting properly, ensure it is sharp and correctly tensioned. Check for any damage to the chain links or teeth, and inspect the guide bar for wear or obstructions.
To clean the air filter, remove the cover, take out the air filter, and gently clean it with a soft brush or compressed air. If heavily soiled, replace it with a new one.
Signs of a dull chain include fine sawdust instead of wood chips, needing to apply more pressure while cutting, and the chainsaw pulling to one side.
To store the MS 440, empty the fuel tank, clean the chainsaw thoroughly, remove the chain for separate storage, and keep the unit in a dry, safe place.
If the chainsaw is overheating, verify that the air intake and cooling fins are clean, ensure the oil reservoir is full, and check the chain tension and lubrication.
