To start the Stihl MS 271, engage the chain brake, set the master control lever to the choke position, pull the starter rope until the engine fires, then move the master control lever to the run position and start the engine.
For the Stihl MS 291, perform daily maintenance such as checking the chain lubrication and tension, cleaning the air filter, and inspecting the spark plug. Monthly, ensure the guide bar is clean and the clutch is functioning properly.
Check for fuel issues by ensuring the fuel tank is filled and the fuel is fresh. Inspect the spark plug for fouling, and clean or replace it if necessary. Finally, verify the air filter is clean and not clogged.
Use a 50:1 fuel-to-oil ratio with high-quality, unleaded gasoline and a premium 2-stroke engine oil specifically designed for chainsaws.
To adjust the chain tension, ensure the saw is off, loosen the nuts on the sprocket cover, and use the tensioning screw to adjust the chain until it fits snugly against the guide bar but can still be moved by hand.
Overheating may be caused by a dirty air filter, improper fuel mixture, or a clogged cooling system. Clean or replace the air filter, ensure the correct fuel mixture is used, and inspect the cooling fins for obstructions.
Always wear protective gear, including gloves, goggles, and ear protection. Ensure the chain brake is engaged during startup, and maintain a firm grip on the saw while operating.
Remove the air filter cover, take out the air filter, and clean it with warm soapy water. Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling it. For heavily clogged filters, consider replacing them.
Power loss can occur due to a dirty air filter, spark plug issues, or an incorrectly tensioned chain. Clean the air filter, check and replace the spark plug if necessary, and ensure the chain is properly tensioned.
Inspect the spark plug after every 100 hours of operation. Replace it if there are signs of wear or deposits that cannot be removed.
