To start the Stihl MS 270/MS 280, ensure the chain brake is engaged, move the Master Control Lever to the cold start position, pull the starter rope until the engine fires briefly, move the lever to the warm start position, and pull the starter rope again until the engine starts.
The correct fuel mixture for the Stihl MS 270/MS 280 is 50:1, meaning 50 parts of unleaded gasoline to 1 part of high-quality 2-stroke engine oil.
If your Stihl MS 270/MS 280 won't start, check the fuel level and mixture, inspect the spark plug for damage or fouling, ensure the air filter is clean, and verify that the fuel filter is not clogged.
Sharpen the chain whenever you notice a decrease in cutting efficiency or if the sawdust becomes powdery. Regular sharpening is recommended after every few hours of use or when needed.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning or replacing the air filter, checking and adjusting the chain tension, inspecting the spark plug, lubricating the bar and chain, and cleaning the cooling fins on the cylinder.
Adjust the carburetor by locating the three adjustment screws labeled L (low), H (high), and LA (idle speed). Turn the L and H screws to adjust fuel mixture for low and high speeds, and the LA screw to set the idle speed. Refer to the manual for specific settings.
Overheating can be caused by a dirty air filter, improper fuel mixture, restricted air flow to the engine, or a dull chain. Ensure all components are clean and functioning properly, and use the correct fuel mixture.
To replace the chain, first ensure the chainsaw is turned off and cooled down. Engage the chain brake, remove the sprocket cover, take off the old chain, place the new chain on the bar, adjust the tension, and reassemble the saw.
Common signs include difficulty starting the engine, misfires, reduced engine performance, and visible damage or fouling on the spark plug. Replace the spark plug if any of these symptoms occur.
To prevent the chain from dulling quickly, avoid cutting dirty or abrasive materials, maintain proper chain tension, regularly sharpen the chain, and ensure the bar and chain are adequately lubricated.
