To start the Stihl MS 261 C-M, ensure the chain brake is engaged, place the saw on a flat surface, switch the master control lever to the choke position, pull the starter rope until the engine fires briefly, then move the control lever to the run position and pull the starter rope again until the engine starts.
Check the fuel level, ensure the spark plug is clean and properly gapped, inspect the air filter for clogs, and verify that the chain brake is disengaged. If problems persist, consider consulting a Stihl technician.
It's recommended to clean the air filter after every 10 hours of operation or more frequently if operating in dusty conditions.
Use a high-quality 2-stroke engine oil mixed at a ratio of 50:1 with unleaded gasoline that has an octane rating of at least 89.
The MS 261 C-M features the M-Tronic system, which automatically adjusts the carburetor settings. If you suspect issues, ensure the air filter is clean and the fuel is fresh. For manual adjustments, consult a professional.
Check for a clogged air filter or cooling fins, ensure the fuel mixture is correct, and make sure the chain is properly lubricated. Overheating can also be caused by prolonged use without breaks.
Ensure the chain is tensioned so that it can be pulled away from the bar slightly but snaps back into place. Adjust the tension when the chain is cool, and recheck it after a few minutes of operation.
Check the air filter and fuel filter for blockages, ensure the spark plug is in good condition, and verify that the carburetor settings are correct. It may also be necessary to inspect the exhaust for any blockages.
Wear protective gear including a helmet with face shield, ear protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps, and sturdy boots. Ensure that clothing is snug to prevent snagging.
Drain the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops to clear the carburetor. Clean the saw thoroughly, remove the chain and bar, and store them separately. Store the chainsaw in a dry, clean place.
