Stihl MS 260 Instruction Manual

To start the Stihl MS 260, first ensure the chain brake is engaged. Set the Master Control Lever to the "cold start" position. Pull the starter rope until the engine fires briefly. Move the Master Control Lever to "warm start" and pull the starter rope again until the engine runs.
The Stihl MS 260 requires a 50:1 fuel mixture of gasoline to two-stroke engine oil. Use high-quality 2-stroke oil and unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89.
Check the fuel supply and ensure the tank has fresh fuel. Inspect the spark plug for wear or fouling and replace if necessary. Verify that the air filter is clean and not clogged. Ensure the carburetor settings are correct and check for any blockages in the fuel line.
The air filter should be checked before each use and cleaned or replaced as needed. Under normal conditions, replace the air filter every 100 hours of operation or more frequently in dusty environments.
Use a high-quality bar and chain oil specifically designed for chainsaws. Stihl's own brand of chain oil is recommended, as it provides optimal lubrication and performance.
To tension the chain, first loosen the nuts on the sprocket cover. Turn the tensioning screw clockwise until the chain fits snugly against the underside of the guide bar. Ensure the chain moves freely when pulled by hand, then tighten the sprocket cover nuts securely.
Regular maintenance includes checking and cleaning the air filter, inspecting and replacing the spark plug, sharpening the chain, checking the chain tension, and lubricating the bar and chain. Additionally, inspect for fuel and oil leaks and clean the cooling fins.
To sharpen the chain, secure the chainsaw and ensure the chain brake is engaged. Use a round file matched to the chain's specifications. File each cutter at a consistent angle and depth, maintaining even pressure. Be sure to file the depth gauges periodically for optimal performance.
If the chainsaw overheats, stop the engine and allow it to cool. Check the air filter and cooling fins for blockages and clean them if necessary. Ensure the chain is properly tensioned and lubricated. Also, verify that the fuel mixture is correct.
For storage, clean the chainsaw thoroughly, empty the fuel tank, and run the engine until it stops to clear the carburetor. Remove the chain and guide bar, clean them, and store them separately. Store the chainsaw in a dry, secure location away from direct sunlight.
