Stihl MS 201 Instruction Manual

To start the Stihl MS 201, ensure the chain brake is engaged, set the Master Control Lever to the cold start position, and pull the starter cord until the engine fires. Once it fires, move the lever to the warm start position and pull again until the engine runs.
The chain should be tight enough that it doesn't sag from the guide bar, yet loose enough to be pulled around by hand. Adjust the tension with the side-mounted tensioning screw while wearing gloves for safety.
Clean the air filter after every 5 hours of operation or more frequently if working in dusty conditions. Remove the filter cover, take out the filter, and clean it using warm, soapy water or replace if necessary.
Use a 50:1 ratio of gasoline to Stihl 2-stroke engine oil. Always use fresh, unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89. Mix thoroughly before use.
Check the fuel level, ensure the spark plug is clean and functional, verify the air filter is not clogged, and make sure the carburetor is adjusted correctly. If issues persist, consult a Stihl service professional.
Power loss can be due to a dirty air filter, old fuel, or a clogged spark arrestor. Clean or replace the air filter, refill with fresh fuel, and clean the spark arrestor screen as needed.
Regularly sharpen the chain using a round file, check the tension, and lubricate it with bar and chain oil. Inspect for wear or damage frequently and replace if necessary.
A crooked cut may indicate a dull chain or uneven sharpening. Sharpen the chain evenly on both sides, ensuring all cutters are the same length. Replace the chain if it’s damaged.
Ensure proper ventilation by keeping the air intake clean, use the correct fuel mix, and avoid running the engine at high RPMs for extended periods. Regular maintenance checks help prevent overheating.
Regular maintenance includes checking and replacing the air filter, inspecting and sharpening the chain, cleaning the spark plug, checking chain tension, and ensuring the fuel mix is fresh.
