To start the Stihl MS 171 chainsaw, engage the chain brake by pushing it forward, set the master control lever to the cold start position, pull the starter handle until the engine fires, then push the master control lever to the warm start position and pull again until the engine runs.
Regularly check the air filter for dirt and debris. Clean it by tapping against a surface, rinsing with warm soapy water, or replacing it as needed to ensure optimal performance.
If the Stihl MS 211 chainsaw won't start after long storage, check the fuel for degradation, inspect the spark plug for corrosion or wear, and ensure the air filter is clean. Fresh fuel and a clean spark plug may resolve the issue.
Poor cutting performance can be due to a dull chain, incorrect chain tension, or a clogged air filter. Sharpen the chain, adjust the tension according to the manual, and clean the air filter to improve performance.
To adjust the chain tension on a Stihl MS 181, loosen the nuts on the sprocket cover slightly, turn the tensioning screw until the chain is snug against the bar, and then retighten the sprocket cover nuts. Ensure the chain moves freely.
Sharpen the chain on your Stihl MS 211 whenever you notice a decrease in cutting efficiency or after every few hours of use. Regular sharpening maintains efficiency and safety.
If your Stihl MS 171 is overheating, ensure the air intake is clear of debris, check the cooling fins for blockage, and verify that the fuel mixture is correct. Adjust or clean as necessary to prevent overheating.
To prevent fuel-related issues, drain the fuel tank and carburetor, or use a fuel stabilizer before storing your Stihl MS 181. This minimizes gumming and varnishing in the fuel system.
The recommended fuel mix ratio for the Stihl MS 211 is 50:1, using high-quality 2-stroke oil and unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89.
To clean the spark arrestor screen on a Stihl MS 171, remove the muffler cover, take out the screen, and clean it with a wire brush or replace it if damaged. Reassemble in reverse order.
