To start a Stihl MS 170 chainsaw, first engage the chain brake. Set the master control lever to the cold start position. Pull the starter rope until the engine fires briefly. Move the lever to the warm start position, then pull the starter rope again until the engine starts.
The Stihl MS 180 chainsaw requires a 50:1 fuel mixture ratio, which means 50 parts gasoline to 1 part 2-stroke engine oil. Use high-quality 89 octane unleaded gasoline and Stihl 2-stroke engine oil for optimal performance.
If your Stihl MS 170 chainsaw won't start, check the fuel level and ensure the fuel is fresh. Inspect the spark plug for wear or damage, and replace if necessary. Make sure the air filter is clean and the carburetor is not clogged.
To replace the chain, first ensure the chainsaw is off and the chain brake is engaged. Remove the sprocket cover, loosen the chain tensioner, and remove the old chain. Place the new chain on the bar, ensuring correct direction, adjust the tension, and replace the sprocket cover.
Regularly check the air filter for dust and debris. Clean the filter by gently tapping it or washing it in warm, soapy water. Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling. Replace the air filter if it is damaged or excessively dirty.
To adjust the carburetor, locate the three adjustment screws marked L (low), H (high), and LA (idle speed). Adjust the L and H screws to fine-tune the fuel mixture, and use the LA screw to adjust the idle speed, ensuring the chain does not move at idle.
To sharpen the chain, use a round file that matches the chain's pitch. File each cutter at a consistent angle, using the file guide for accuracy. File each tooth evenly, and maintain the depth gauges with a flat file.
Clean the bar and chain after each use to remove sawdust, sap, and debris. Regular cleaning prevents buildup and ensures smooth operation. Inspect for wear or damage during cleaning and sharpen the chain as needed.
If the chain is not turning, check if the chain brake is engaged. Ensure the chain tension is not too tight and the clutch and sprocket are functioning properly. Inspect for obstructions in the bar groove or chain track.
To store the chainsaw long-term, drain the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops to clear the carburetor. Clean the chainsaw thoroughly, including the bar and chain. Store in a dry place, and protect the chain with a bar cover.
