To start the Stihl HS 85, ensure the stop switch is in the 'ON' position. Set the choke lever to 'CLOSED', press the fuel pump bulb at least 5 times, and pull the starter cord until the engine fires. Move the choke to 'OPEN' and pull the starter cord again until the engine starts.
The recommended fuel mix for the Stihl HS 85 is a 50:1 ratio of gasoline to 2-stroke engine oil. Use high-quality 89 octane or higher unleaded gasoline and Stihl 2-cycle engine oil for optimal performance.
Sharpen the blades of your Stihl HS 85 after approximately every 50 hours of use or when you notice a decline in cutting performance. Regularly inspecting the blades for damage and sharpness is recommended.
If your Stihl HS 85 won't start, check the fuel level and ensure the fuel mix is correct. Inspect the spark plug for damage or fouling and replace if necessary. Verify that the air filter is clean and the choke is set correctly.
To clean the air filter, remove the air filter cover and take out the filter. Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse with clean water, and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling. Replace if the filter is damaged or excessively dirty.
Excessive vibration can be caused by unbalanced or damaged blades. Inspect the blades for damage and ensure they are properly tightened. Additionally, check for loose or damaged parts in the engine and handle assembly.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the air filter, inspecting and sharpening the blades, checking the spark plug, and ensuring all nuts and bolts are tight. Regularly inspect fuel lines and replace them if they show signs of wear or damage.
To store the Stihl HS 85 for the winter, empty the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops to clear the carburetor. Clean the tool thoroughly, inspect for any damage, and store in a dry, secure place away from direct sunlight.
If the Stihl HS 85 is cutting unevenly, check the blade sharpness and ensure both blades are aligned properly. Inspect for any obstructions or damage and adjust the blade tension as necessary.
To reduce fuel consumption, ensure the air filter is clean and the spark plug is in good condition. Regular maintenance and using the correct fuel mix can also improve efficiency. Avoid running the engine at full throttle for extended periods.
