To start a Stihl FS 81 trimmer, set the choke to the closed position, press the primer bulb several times, set the throttle to start, pull the starter cord until the engine fires, then move the choke to open and pull again to start.
Check the fuel level and quality, ensure the spark plug is clean and properly gapped, inspect the air filter for clogs, and make sure the ignition switch is on.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the air filter, checking and replacing the spark plug annually, inspecting the fuel filter, and checking the gearbox lubrication.
To replace the trimmer line, remove the spool, wind new line tightly and evenly onto the spool, then reassemble according to the directional arrows.
The correct fuel mixture for a Stihl FS 86 is a 50:1 ratio of gasoline to 2-cycle engine oil.
To adjust the carburetor, turn the low-speed screw (L) and high-speed screw (H) to adjust fuel flow, and adjust the idle screw (LA) to ensure smooth idling. Refer to the manual for specific settings.
Check for damaged or unbalanced cutting attachments, ensure all bolts and screws are tightened, and inspect the driveshaft for wear or damage.
The air filter should be checked and cleaned after every 25 hours of use and replaced if it shows signs of damage or is heavily soiled.
Common issues include starting problems, which can often be resolved by checking the fuel system and spark plug, and cutting performance issues, which may require line or blade replacement.
Drain the fuel tank, clean the trimmer thoroughly, inspect for any damage, and store in a dry, safe place away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
