To start the Stihl FS 61 trimmer, first ensure the trimmer is on a flat surface. Set the choke lever to the cold start position. Press the primer bulb a few times until fuel is visible. Pull the starter rope until the engine fires. Move the choke to the run position and pull the starter rope again to start the engine.
Use a high-quality 2-cycle engine oil mixed with unleaded gasoline at a 50:1 ratio. Ensure the gasoline has an octane rating of at least 89 and contains no more than 10% ethanol.
Check the fuel level and ensure fresh, properly mixed fuel is used. Inspect the spark plug for wear or damage and clean or replace it if necessary. Ensure the air filter is clean and check the fuel filter for clogs. Make sure the choke is in the correct position.
Regular maintenance tasks include cleaning or replacing the air filter, inspecting and replacing the spark plug annually, lubricating the gearbox, and checking the fuel filter. Also, ensure that the cutting tool is sharp and undamaged.
To replace the trimmer line, remove the spool from the trimmer head. Cut a length of appropriate trimmer line (typically 2.4mm or 0.095 inches). Wind the line tightly around the spool while keeping it in the guide tracks. Secure the line ends in the notches and reattach the spool to the trimmer head.
Excessive vibration can be caused by damaged or unbalanced cutting tools. Inspect the cutting attachment for damage and ensure it is properly balanced. Also, check the drive shaft and clutch for wear or damage. Tighten any loose bolts or screws.
To clean the air filter, remove the filter cover and take out the filter element. Wash the filter in warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling. If the filter is damaged or heavily soiled, replace it with a new one.
If the engine stalls, check for fuel flow issues such as clogged filters or lines. Ensure the air filter is clean and inspect the spark plug for fouling. Adjust the carburetor settings if necessary, following the manufacturer's guidelines.
To adjust the carburetor, locate the adjustment screws marked L (low speed) and H (high speed). Turn the screws gently to adjust the fuel mixture until the engine runs smoothly at idle and full throttle. Consult the manual for specific adjustment instructions.
To extend the lifespan, perform regular maintenance, use the correct fuel mixture, store the trimmer in a dry location, and avoid overworking the engine. Regularly inspect and replace worn parts, and follow proper operating procedures.
