To start the Stihl FS 55, set the trimmer on a flat surface. Move the stop switch to the "I" position, press the fuel pump bulb several times until fuel is visible, move the choke lever to the cold start position, pull the starter rope until the engine runs briefly, then move the choke to the run position and pull again until the engine starts.
Use unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89 and mix it with high-quality 2-cycle engine oil at a ratio of 50:1. Stihl recommends their own brand of engine oil for optimal performance.
The air filter should be checked and cleaned after every 25 hours of operation or more frequently if you are working in dusty conditions. Rinse the filter in warm, soapy water and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.
To replace the trimmer line, ensure the engine is off and cool. Remove the spool from the trimmer head, cut two lengths of line about 13 feet each, and wind the line onto the spool in the direction indicated. Secure the line ends in the notches and reassemble the spool onto the head.
If the FS 55 won't start, check if there is fresh fuel in the tank and that it is mixed correctly. Ensure the spark plug is clean and in good condition. Inspect the air filter for clogs and clean it if necessary. Also, confirm that the choke is set correctly according to the starting instructions.
Regular maintenance includes checking and cleaning the air filter, inspecting and replacing the spark plug annually, lubricating the gear head, and checking the fuel system for leaks or damage. Follow the maintenance schedule in the user manual for detailed guidance.
Adjusting the carburetor should be done cautiously and only if necessary. Locate the adjustment screws marked 'L', 'H', and 'LA'. Adjusting 'L' affects low-speed performance, 'H' affects high-speed performance, and 'LA' adjusts idle speed. It's recommended to refer to the user manual or consult a professional for precise adjustments.
If the engine stalls after starting, it could be due to an incorrect choke setting, clogged air filter, or fuel line issues. Ensure the choke is set to the run position after starting, clean the air filter, and check for any obstructions in the fuel line.
To prevent the trimmer line from breaking, avoid contact with hard surfaces, use the correct line diameter specified for the FS 55, and ensure the line is wound correctly on the spool. Regularly check for signs of wear and replace the line as needed.
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including eye and ear protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear. Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders and obstacles. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for operation and maintenance to ensure safe use.
