To start the Stihl FS 38, ensure it is on a flat surface. Move the stop switch to the "on" position, set the choke lever to "cold start," and press the fuel pump bulb until fuel is visible. Pull the starter rope until the engine fires, then move the choke to "run" and pull again to start.
The Stihl FS 38 requires a fuel mixture of 50:1, which is equivalent to 2.6 ounces of high-quality 2-stroke engine oil per gallon of gasoline.
First, remove the spool by pressing the tabs on the trimmer head. Cut two 10-foot lengths of line and insert them into the spool's holes. Wind the lines evenly in the direction of the arrows, then secure them in the notches. Reattach the spool and pull the lines through the eyelets.
Stalling at idle can be caused by incorrect carburetor settings, a clogged air filter, or old fuel. Clean or replace the air filter, ensure fresh fuel is used, and consider adjusting the carburetor settings as per the manual.
The air filter should be checked after every 5 hours of operation and cleaned or replaced if necessary. Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of the engine.
To winterize the Stihl FS 38, empty the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops. Clean the unit thoroughly, inspect for damaged parts, and store it in a dry, dust-free location. Consider removing the spark plug and adding a few drops of oil to the cylinder to prevent rust.
To adjust the carburetor, locate the "L" (low speed), "H" (high speed), and "LA" (idle) screws. Adjust the "L" screw for smooth acceleration, "H" for top RPMs, and "LA" to set idle speed. Make incremental adjustments and test after each change. Refer to the manual for specific guidelines.
If the trimmer head doesn't spin, check for line tangling, debris blockage, or a worn-out drive shaft. Ensure the drive shaft is engaged properly and that the trimmer head is securely attached. Clean and inspect the components for damage.
Prevent overheating by ensuring the engine cooling fins and air vents are clean and free from debris. Use the correct fuel mixture, and avoid running the trimmer at full throttle for extended periods. Regular maintenance checks help in preventing overheating issues.
If the trimmer is difficult to start, check the spark plug for fouling or damage, ensure fresh fuel is used, and inspect the air filter for clogs. Verify that the choke and throttle settings are correct. Regular maintenance helps prevent starting issues.
