To start the Stihl FS 160/180, ensure the choke is engaged, the throttle trigger is locked, and the ignition switch is on. Pull the starter rope until the engine fires, then disengage the choke and start the engine again.
The Stihl FS 160/180 requires a fuel mixture of 50:1 gasoline to 2-stroke engine oil. Always use fresh, unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89.
If the engine won't start, check the fuel level, ensure the spark plug is clean and properly gapped, and verify that the air filter is not clogged. Also, make sure that the ignition switch is in the 'on' position.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the air filter after every 10 hours of use, inspecting and replacing the spark plug annually, and checking the fuel system for leaks or damage. Lubricate the gear head every 25 hours.
To replace the trimmer line, remove the spool from the trimmer head, wind the new line evenly onto the spool, and secure it in place. Then, reattach the spool to the trimmer head, ensuring it is seated properly.
If the trimmer line breaks frequently, ensure you are using the correct line diameter and type. Avoid contact with hard surfaces, and make sure the line is wound correctly on the spool.
To adjust the carburetor, locate the adjustment screws on the carburetor body. Use a small screwdriver to turn the screws: 'L' for low speed, 'H' for high speed, and 'LA' for idle speed. Adjust until the engine runs smoothly.
Excessive vibration can be caused by an unbalanced cutting attachment, loose parts, or worn engine mounts. Inspect the attachments and tighten any loose screws or bolts. Replace worn parts as needed.
Always wear protective gear, including safety goggles, gloves, and hearing protection. Ensure the work area is clear of debris and bystanders. Follow all safety instructions in the operator's manual.
For off-season storage, clean the unit thoroughly, empty the fuel tank, and run the engine until it stops to clear the carburetor of fuel. Store in a dry, sheltered area away from direct sunlight.
