To start your Stihl 036 chainsaw, first ensure the chain brake is engaged. Set the master control lever to the cold start position (choke closed) if the engine is cold. Pull the starter rope until the engine fires briefly. Then, move the master control to the warm start position (half-throttle) and pull the starter rope again until the engine starts. Once running, press the throttle trigger to disengage the half-throttle lock.
The correct fuel mixture for a Stihl 036 chainsaw is 50:1, which means 50 parts gasoline to 1 part 2-stroke engine oil. Use high-quality 2-cycle engine oil and unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89.
If your Stihl 036 won't start, check the following: Ensure the fuel tank is filled with fresh fuel mixture. Check the spark plug for fouling or damage and clean or replace if necessary. Inspect the air filter for dirt or blockage and clean or replace as needed. Lastly, verify that the choke is in the correct position for starting.
Regular maintenance for a Stihl 036 includes: cleaning or replacing the air filter, checking and replacing the spark plug annually, sharpening the chain regularly, inspecting the chain tension, and cleaning the guide bar groove. Additionally, inspect the fuel filter and replace as necessary, and ensure the chain brake functions properly.
To sharpen the chain on your Stihl 036, first secure the chainsaw in a stable position. Use a round file that matches the chain’s pitch. File each cutter with an even number of strokes, maintaining the same angle as the existing cutters. Check and adjust the depth gauges as needed using a depth gauge tool.
The chain tension on a Stihl 036 should be tight enough so that the chain can be pulled smoothly around the bar by hand, but not so tight that it binds. You should be able to pull the chain up from the bar slightly, but the drive links should not come out of the bar groove.
If the chain on your Stihl 036 keeps coming loose, check that the chain tension is correctly adjusted and that the bar nuts are tightened securely. Also, inspect the chain and bar for wear and replace parts if necessary. Ensure that the chain is not excessively worn or stretched, as this can cause it to loosen.
To clean the air filter on your Stihl 036, remove the top cover to access the filter. Carefully remove the air filter and use compressed air to blow out dust and debris. If the filter is heavily soiled, wash it in warm, soapy water and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.
If your Stihl 036 is overheating, make sure the air intake and cooling fins are free from debris and blockages. Check the fuel mixture to ensure it is correct, as running lean can cause overheating. Inspect the muffler for blockages and clean as necessary. Allow the saw to cool before continuing use.
Inspect the spark plug for signs of wear such as a burnt electrode, heavy carbon deposits, or a cracked insulator. If the spark plug appears damaged or the engine misfires, it should be replaced. For optimal performance, replace the spark plug annually or as needed.
