To start the Stihl 028, first ensure the chain brake is engaged. Set the master control lever to the cold start position. Pull the starter rope until you hear the engine attempt to fire. Then, adjust the lever to the warm start position and pull the rope again until the engine starts.
The Stihl 028 requires a 50:1 fuel mixture, which is 50 parts gasoline to 1 part 2-stroke engine oil. Use high-quality 2-cycle oil and unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89.
To clean the air filter, first remove the top cover by loosening the screws. Take out the filter element carefully. Wash it in warm, soapy water and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling. Replace if it is damaged or too dirty to clean.
If your Stihl 028 won't start, check for fuel issues, such as stale fuel or incorrect mix. Ensure the spark plug is clean and functioning. Also, inspect the air filter for blockages and ensure the carburetor is clean.
Sharpen the chain every time you refuel the chainsaw. A sharp chain is essential for efficient cutting and reducing wear on the engine. Use a proper chainsaw file and follow the manufacturer's angle recommendations.
To tension the chain, loosen the bar nuts slightly. Turn the tensioning screw clockwise until the chain is snug against the bar. Ensure the chain can still be pulled easily along the bar by hand. Tighten the bar nuts to secure the chain.
To replace the spark plug, remove the top cover and disconnect the spark plug wire. Use a spark plug wrench to unscrew the old plug. Install the new spark plug by screwing it in by hand, then tighten with the wrench. Reconnect the spark plug wire.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the air filter, checking and sharpening the chain, inspecting the spark plug, and cleaning the cooling fins. Also, examine the chain tension and lubrication system frequently.
If the chain is not getting oil, check the oil reservoir to ensure it's full. Inspect the oil filter for blockages and clean the oil passages. Verify the oil pump is functioning correctly. Replace any damaged components if necessary.
Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection. Ensure the chain brake is working and never operate the chainsaw above shoulder height. Keep bystanders at a safe distance.
