To start your Stihl chainsaw, ensure the chain brake is engaged, switch the master control to the start position, pull the starter rope until the engine fires, then push the choke back in and pull the rope again until the engine runs.
Stihl chainsaws require a 50:1 fuel mix ratio, using high-quality 2-cycle engine oil and fresh unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89.
Clean the air filter after every 10 hours of operation or more frequently in dusty conditions to ensure optimal performance.
The chain should be tight enough that you can lift it slightly from the guide bar but not so loose that the drive links come out of the bar groove. Check the tension with the saw off and cool.
Check the spark plug for signs of wear or carbon build-up. If the insulator is cracked, electrodes are burned, or the plug is heavily fouled, it should be replaced.
To sharpen the chain, secure the chainsaw, engage the chain brake, use a round file to sharpen each cutter at the correct angle, and file all teeth to the same length.
The chain may come off due to improper tension, a worn-out bar or chain, or incorrect installation. Check and adjust the tension, inspect the bar and chain for wear, and ensure proper installation.
Check the fuel mix, spark plug, air filter, and carburetor. Ensure the chainsaw has fresh fuel, a clean air filter, and a working spark plug. If these are fine, the carburetor might need adjustment or cleaning.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the air filter, checking and sharpening the chain, inspecting the spark plug, cleaning the guide bar groove, and checking chain tension.
Drain the fuel tank, run the engine until it stops, clean the chainsaw, remove the chain and bar, and store them separately. Keep the chainsaw in a dry place, protected from dust and moisture.
