Stihl 017 018 Instruction Manual

To start the Stihl 017/018 chainsaw, first ensure the chain brake is engaged. Set the master control lever to the cold start position, pull the starter rope until you hear the engine fire, then move the master control to the warm start position and pull the rope again to start the engine.
The correct fuel mixture for the Stihl 017/018 chainsaw is 50:1 (gasoline to oil) using high-quality 2-stroke engine oil.
If your Stihl 017/018 chainsaw won't start, check for fuel in the tank, ensure the spark plug is clean and functional, the air filter is not clogged, and the carburetor is properly adjusted.
The air filter should be cleaned after every 5 hours of use or sooner if you operate in dusty conditions, to ensure optimal performance.
To tension the chain, loosen the nuts on the sprocket cover slightly. Use the tensioning screw to adjust the chain tension. The chain should be snug but still able to move freely. Tighten the nuts once the tension is correct.
If the chainsaw is overheating, ensure that the air vents are clear of debris and that the air filter is clean. Also, check the fuel mixture and oil level, and allow the saw to cool down before further use.
To sharpen the chain, use a round file and a filing guide to file each cutter at a consistent angle. Ensure all cutters are the same length and check the depth gauges with a depth gauge tool.
Poor cutting performance can result from a dull chain, improper chain tension, or incorrect carburetor settings. Sharpen the chain, adjust its tension, and ensure the carburetor is tuned correctly.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the air filter, inspecting and replacing the spark plug as needed, checking the chain tension, sharpening the chain, and ensuring the bar is lubricated.
To store the chainsaw, clean it thoroughly, empty the fuel tank, run the engine until it stops, and store it in a dry place. Ensure the chain is well-lubricated to prevent rusting.
