To assemble the Poulan Pro SM446E Pole Saw, first attach the pole sections together by aligning the holes and securing them with the provided locking pins. Then, attach the saw head to the pole by sliding it into place and tightening the securing knob. Make sure all connections are secure before operation.
To adjust the chain tension, first ensure the pole saw is turned off and unplugged. Loosen the bar adjustment knob slightly. Turn the tensioning screw clockwise to tighten the chain and counterclockwise to loosen it. The chain should be snug but still move freely around the bar. Tighten the adjustment knob once properly tensioned.
For optimal performance, use a high-quality bar and chain oil specifically designed for pole saws and chainsaws. Avoid using motor oil or other types of lubricant, as they may not provide adequate protection or could damage the saw.
If the pole saw won't start, check if it is properly plugged into a power source. Inspect the power cord for any damage. Ensure the extension cord is suitable for outdoor use. If the saw still does not start, inspect the fuse or circuit breaker and reset if necessary.
Regularly inspect and clean the pole saw after each use. Check the chain tension and sharpen the chain as needed. Lubricate the bar and chain before each use. Inspect the power cord for damage. Store the saw in a dry place when not in use. Perform a more thorough inspection and cleaning every 3 months or 25 hours of use.
To extend or retract the pole, loosen the pole adjustment knob, slide the pole to the desired length, and then tighten the knob to secure it in place. Ensure the locking mechanisms are engaged before operating the saw for safety.
Always wear protective gear, including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. Ensure the work area is clear of bystanders and obstacles. Be aware of overhead branches that may fall. Do not use the pole saw in wet conditions or near electrical lines.
To sharpen the chain, use a round file that matches the chain's pitch. Secure the pole saw in a vise, ensuring the chain is tight. File each cutter at a consistent angle, sharpening one side of the chain and then the other. Maintain even pressure and count strokes to ensure uniformity.
Oil leaks can occur if the oil reservoir is overfilled or if the saw is stored incorrectly. Check the oil cap for damage and ensure it is tightly sealed. Store the saw horizontally in a stable position to prevent leaks. If the problem persists, inspect for cracks in the oil tank or lines.
If the chain frequently comes off, check the chain tension and adjust if necessary. Ensure the bar is properly aligned and the sprocket is not worn. Inspect the chain for damage or excessive wear and replace it if needed. Make sure the bar nuts are securely tightened.
