To change the oil, first ensure the engine is off and cool. Locate the oil drain valve under the engine. Place a suitable container beneath it, then twist the valve and allow the old oil to drain completely. Replace the oil filter if necessary, then refill with the recommended oil type and capacity.
If the tractor won't start, check the battery connections for any signs of corrosion and ensure they are tight. Verify that the fuel tank has fresh gasoline. Check the spark plug for wear or damage and replace if necessary. Also, ensure the parking brake is engaged and the blade disengagement lever is in the correct position.
To adjust the cutting height, locate the cutting height adjustment lever on the side of the tractor. Move the lever to the desired cutting height setting. Ensure the blades are disengaged and the tractor is on a flat surface before making adjustments.
Before storing for winter, clean the tractor thoroughly. Drain the fuel system or add a stabilizer to the fuel. Change the oil and filter, and remove the battery, storing it in a cool, dry place. Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure and cover the tractor to protect it from dust and moisture.
Uneven cutting can be caused by a dull blade, uneven tire pressure, or an improperly leveled deck. Sharpen or replace the blade as needed, check and adjust the tire pressure, and ensure the deck is level from side to side and front to back.
The recommended spark plug type is specified in the owner’s manual. Generally, a Champion RC12YC is suitable for the Poulan Pro PR185G42STF, but always confirm with the manual or a professional.
The air filter should be inspected before each use and replaced if it appears dirty or damaged. As a general maintenance routine, replace the air filter at least once per season or more frequently in dusty conditions.
Excessive vibration can be caused by unbalanced or damaged blades, loose bolts, or debris caught in the deck. Inspect and balance or replace the blades, tighten any loose fasteners, and clear any debris.
To replace the drive belt, first, disconnect the spark plug and remove the mower deck. Locate the belt keeper and guide, and remove them to release the old belt. Install the new belt according to the routing diagram, secure the belt keeper and guide, and reattach the mower deck.
To clean the underside of the mower deck, ensure the tractor is off and disconnect the spark plug. Use a garden hose to rinse away grass clippings and debris. For stubborn buildup, use a scraper or putty knife to remove it. Dry thoroughly to prevent rust.
