To start the Poulan Pro 1420 chainsaw, ensure it is on a flat surface. Move the chain brake forward to activate it. Set the choke to the full position, press the primer bulb 6 times, then pull the starter rope until the engine fires. Once it starts, move the choke to the half position and allow the engine to warm up.
The Poulan Pro 1420 requires a fuel mix of unleaded gasoline and 2-cycle oil at a ratio of 40:1. This means 3.2 ounces of 2-cycle oil per gallon of gasoline. Always use fresh, clean fuel to ensure optimal performance.
It is recommended to clean the air filter after every 5 hours of use or more frequently in dusty conditions. To clean, remove the air filter cover, take out the filter, and wash it in warm soapy water. Allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.
If the chainsaw chain is not rotating, first ensure the chain brake is disengaged. Check the chain tension and adjust if necessary. If the problem persists, inspect the clutch and sprocket for wear or damage, and replace as needed.
To adjust the chain tension, loosen the bar nuts slightly, turn the tensioning screw clockwise to tighten the chain or counterclockwise to loosen it. The chain should be snug against the bar but still allow for manual rotation. Tighten the bar nuts once adjusted.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the air filter, checking and adjusting chain tension, inspecting the chain for sharpness, and lubricating the bar and chain. Additionally, check the fuel filter and spark plug at regular intervals and replace them if necessary.
To sharpen the chain, use a round file that matches the size of the chain teeth. File each tooth at a consistent angle, using a file guide if necessary. Ensure all teeth are the same length and check the depth gauges, filing them down if needed.
Excessive smoke could indicate an incorrect fuel mix or a clogged air filter. Ensure the fuel mix is correct at 40:1 and check the air filter for dirt and debris. If the problem continues, inspect the muffler for blockages.
Stalling can be caused by a dirty air filter, incorrect carburetor settings, or a clogged fuel filter. Clean the air filter, adjust the carburetor according to the manual, and inspect the fuel filter for blockages. Replace parts if needed.
For long-term storage, clean the chainsaw thoroughly, drain the fuel tank, and run the engine until it stops to clear the carburetor. Remove the chain and bar, applying protective oil. Store in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
