To start the Murray FLT185420 tractor, ensure the parking brake is set, the PTO (Power Take-Off) is disengaged, and the gear is in neutral. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the start position. Once the engine starts, release the key.
First, warm up the engine for a few minutes to thin the oil. Turn off the engine and place a drain pan under the oil drain plug. Remove the plug and allow the oil to drain completely. Replace the drain plug and fill the engine with new oil as per specifications in the manual. Check the oil level with the dipstick and adjust if necessary.
If the mower deck does not engage, check the PTO switch for proper operation and ensure the belt is intact and properly tensioned. Inspect the connections and wiring for any damage. Test the electric clutch and replace it if faulty.
Before storing the tractor for winter, clean the unit thoroughly, change the oil, and add a fuel stabilizer to the tank. Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure and cover the tractor to protect it from dust and moisture.
To replace the drive belt, first, disconnect the battery. Remove the mower deck and locate the drive belt. Take note of the belt routing, then remove the belt from the pulleys. Install the new belt following the same routing and reattach the mower deck.
If the engine won't start, check the fuel level and ensure the fuel is not stale. Verify the battery is charged and the connections are clean. Inspect the spark plug for wear or damage and replace it if necessary. Ensure the air filter is clean and not clogged.
The air filter should be checked every 25 hours of operation and replaced every 100 hours or annually, whichever comes first, to ensure optimal engine performance.
The recommended oil type for the Murray FLT185420 tractor is SAE 30 for temperatures above 32°F (0°C) and SAE 5W-30 for temperatures below 32°F (0°C). Always use high-quality detergent oil classified "For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher.
To improve cutting performance, ensure the blades are sharp and balanced. Regularly clean the underside of the mower deck to prevent grass buildup. Adjust the cutting height according to the grass type and condition. Maintain a consistent speed while mowing.
Excessive vibration can be caused by unbalanced blades or debris lodged in the mower deck. Check and balance the blades, and remove any obstructions under the deck. Inspect the engine and transmission mounts for wear and tighten any loose bolts.
