Murray 42L18G60X8A Parts Manual

To change the oil, first run the engine for a few minutes to warm it up, then turn it off. Locate the oil drain plug under the engine, place a pan under it, and remove the plug. Allow the oil to drain completely. Replace the drain plug, and refill with new oil as specified in your manual.
If the tractor won't start, check the battery connections to ensure they are clean and tight. Verify that the battery is charged. Check the fuel level and ensure the fuel shutoff valve is open. Inspect the spark plug for wear and replace if necessary.
Regularly check the blades for sharpness and damage. Sharpen or replace them as needed. Clean the blades after each use to prevent rust. Ensure they are properly balanced when reinstalling.
Use unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87. Avoid using fuel that contains more than 10% ethanol.
To adjust the cutting height, locate the lever on the side of the tractor. Move the lever to the desired position to raise or lower the deck. Make sure both sides are set to the same height for an even cut.
Excessive vibration can be caused by unbalanced blades, damaged pulleys, or worn-out belts. Check the blades for balance and damage. Inspect the pulleys and belts for wear and replace as necessary.
To improve traction, ensure the tires are properly inflated. Use tire chains if necessary. Adjust the weight distribution by adding wheel weights or ballast to the rear of the tractor.
Regular maintenance includes changing the oil and oil filter, cleaning or replacing the air filter, checking spark plugs, and inspecting the fuel system. Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual.
Locate the air filter housing on the engine. Remove the cover and take out the air filter. If it's a paper filter, tap it gently to remove dirt. If it's a foam filter, wash it with mild detergent and water, then allow it to dry before reinstalling.
Check the transmission fluid level and ensure it is at the correct level. Inspect the drive belt for wear and proper tension. If problems persist, consult the manual or a professional technician.
