To start the Murray 40542C Tractor, ensure the parking brake is engaged, the blades are disengaged, and the throttle is set to the choke position. Turn the key to the start position until the engine starts.
If the tractor won't start, check the battery connections for corrosion, ensure the fuel tank has fresh fuel, and verify the spark plug is in good condition. Also, confirm that the safety switches are engaged correctly.
Change the oil after the first 5 hours of use, and then every 50 hours of operation or once per season, whichever comes first. Always use oil recommended by the manufacturer.
The Murray 40542C Tractor is designed to use unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87. Avoid using gasoline with more than 10% ethanol.
To troubleshoot uneven cutting, check that the tire pressure is equal on all sides, the blades are sharp and balanced, and the deck is level. Adjust the deck height if necessary.
To change the blades, ensure the tractor is off and the spark plug is disconnected. Raise the deck to access the blades, then use a wrench to remove the blade bolts. Replace with new blades and tighten securely.
If the tractor vibrates excessively, inspect the blades for damage or imbalance, check for debris around the blade area, and ensure the engine mounts are secure.
To clean the air filter, remove the filter cover and take out the filter. If it's a paper filter, tap it gently to remove dirt. For foam filters, wash with warm, soapy water and let it dry before reinstalling.
To improve traction on slopes, reduce speed, ensure the tires are properly inflated, and add wheel weights or tire chains if necessary. Always drive up and down slopes, not across.
Routine maintenance includes checking the oil level, cleaning or replacing the air filter, inspecting the blades, checking tire pressure, and cleaning the deck. Perform these checks regularly to ensure optimal performance.
