To start the Murray 40542A Tractor, ensure the parking brake is engaged, the mower deck is disengaged, and the throttle is set to the fast position. Turn the ignition key clockwise to start the engine.
Check the battery connections for corrosion or looseness, ensure the fuel tank has enough fuel, and inspect the spark plug for wear or damage. Also, make sure the safety switches are not engaged.
Warm up the engine, then turn it off. Remove the oil drain plug and allow the oil to drain into a pan. Replace the plug and refill with the recommended oil type and amount.
Use SAE 30 oil for temperatures above 32°F (0°C) and SAE 5W-30 for temperatures below 32°F (0°C).
Disconnect the spark plug wire for safety. Then, remove the blade bolt using a wrench. Replace the blade, ensuring it is oriented correctly, and tighten the bolt securely.
Use the deck lift lever located on the right side of the tractor to raise or lower the cutting deck to the desired height. Make sure the deck is level by adjusting the deck wheels as needed.
Ensure the tires are properly inflated and consider using tire chains or wheel weights for better traction on slopes and uneven terrain.
Check the air filter every 25 hours of operation and replace it if it's dirty or damaged. At a minimum, replace it once per mowing season.
Clean the tractor, change the oil, drain the fuel or add a fuel stabilizer, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place, and cover the tractor to protect it from dust and moisture.
Check if the cutting deck is level, inspect the blades for sharpness and damage, and make sure the tire pressures are equal on all sides.
