Regular maintenance includes checking and changing the oil, cleaning or replacing the air filter, inspecting the spark plug, and checking the fuel system. These tasks should be done according to the intervals recommended in the engine's user manual.
Kohler recommends using SAE 10W-30 oil for general use. For temperatures below 32°F (0°C), use SAE 5W-30 for better starting. Always check the oil level before use and maintain it at the full mark.
If the engine won't start, check the fuel level, ensure the spark plug is clean and properly gapped, inspect the air filter for blockages, and verify that the fuel is fresh. Also, ensure the engine is not in need of a choke adjustment.
Inspect the air filter and fuel filter for clogs, ensure the fuel is fresh, and check the spark plug for wear or improper gap. Additionally, verify that the carburetor is clean and the engine is not overloaded.
The air filter should be checked before each use and cleaned or replaced every 25 hours of operation or more frequently in dusty conditions. Refer to the manual for specific guidance.
To replace the spark plug, disconnect the spark plug wire, remove the old spark plug using a spark plug wrench, check the gap on the new plug, and install it by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten with the wrench and reconnect the wire.
Black smoke can indicate a rich fuel mixture. Check the air filter for dirt and ensure the choke is not engaged. Inspect the carburetor for any adjustments that may be needed.
For winter storage, drain the fuel system or add a fuel stabilizer, change the oil, clean the engine, remove the spark plug and add a teaspoon of oil to the cylinder, then replace the plug without connecting the wire. Store in a dry, sheltered location.
The recommended spark plug gap for the Kohler XT6.5 Engine is typically 0.030 inches (0.76 mm). Always refer to the engine's manual for the specific gap setting.
To improve fuel efficiency, ensure regular maintenance such as clean air filters and spark plugs, use fresh fuel, and avoid running the engine at maximum load for long periods. Proper tire inflation and minimizing excessive idling can also help.
