To start a fire, place crumpled newspaper in the firebox and cover it with small kindling. Open the air vents fully and light the newspaper. Once the kindling is burning, gradually add larger pieces of wood.
Use seasoned hardwood like oak, maple, or birch. Avoid softwoods and wet or green wood as they produce more creosote and less heat.
Adjust the air vents to control the heat. Opening the vents increases oxygen flow and heat output, while closing them reduces the heat.
Ensure the chimney is not blocked and check that the air vents are open. Cold weather can cause draft issues; pre-warming the flue with a small fire can help.
Clean the stove and chimney at least once a year, or more frequently if you use the stove regularly. Remove ash build-up whenever it reaches the air vents.
Creosote build-up is often caused by burning unseasoned wood or operating the stove at low temperatures. Ensure proper burning practices to reduce this build-up.
Use dry, seasoned wood and ensure the stove is fully loaded. Adjust the air vents to maintain a steady burn rather than a roaring fire.
Use a damp cloth and a small amount of ash to gently scrub the glass. For tougher stains, use a commercial glass cleaner designed for stoves.
Ensure the chimney is clean and free of obstructions. Check that the room has adequate ventilation and that the stove's air inlets are not blocked.
Close the air vents completely to cut off the oxygen supply. Do not use water, as it can damage the stove and may cause steam burns.
