Jotul 404 Operating Instructions

To start a fire in the Jotul 404 stove, arrange small kindling and newspaper at the bottom, then place larger pieces of wood on top. Light the newspaper, and ensure the air vent is fully open to allow maximum airflow.
The Jotul 404 stove should be cleaned at least once a month during the heating season. This includes removing ash, cleaning the glass, and checking the flue for any obstructions.
Hardwoods such as oak, maple, and beech are best suited for the Jotul 404 stove as they burn longer and produce more heat compared to softwoods. Ensure the wood is well-seasoned with moisture content below 20%.
If the Jotul 404 stove is not producing enough heat, check if the air vents are open and unobstructed. Also, ensure that you are using dry, seasoned wood and that the chimney is clean.
To prevent the glass from blackening, ensure proper airflow by keeping vents open, avoid burning wet or unseasoned wood, and regularly clean the glass with a specialized stove glass cleaner.
If smoke is entering the room, check that the chimney is not blocked, ensure the stove door is sealed properly, and verify that the air vents are open. It's also important to have adequate ventilation in the room.
To replace fire bricks in the Jotul 404 stove, first remove the old bricks and clean the area. Ensure the new bricks fit snugly and are placed according to the stove's manual instructions for proper operation.
The Jotul 404 stove is designed for wood burning only. Burning coal or other non-approved fuels can damage the stove and void the warranty.
Annually, check and clean the chimney, inspect and replace any worn gaskets, examine the firebox and baffle for damage, and ensure all moving parts are lubricated and functioning properly.
To improve draft, ensure the chimney is of adequate height and free from obstructions. Installing a chimney cap or draft inducer can also help. Additionally, check for proper sealing around the stove and chimney connections.
