To properly light a fire, start by placing crumpled newspaper and kindling in the firebox. Open the air control fully, light the newspaper, and gradually add larger logs as the kindling burns. Ensure the door is slightly ajar to enhance draft until the fire is well-established.
Ensure the chimney is clean and free of obstructions. Check that the air controls are open and that there is adequate ventilation in the room. Cold weather or a cold chimney can also affect draft, so warming the flue before lighting can help.
The chimney should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year, or more frequently if you use the stove heavily. Regular cleaning prevents creosote buildup, which can lead to chimney fires.
Hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch are ideal for burning in the Jotul F 400 because they produce more heat and burn longer. Ensure the wood is well-seasoned with a moisture content of 20% or less.
To improve efficiency, use fully seasoned wood, maintain clean glass and surfaces, ensure a well-sealed door gasket, and operate the stove with adequate but not excessive airflow.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the glass, checking the door seals, removing ash from the firebox, inspecting the baffle, and cleaning the chimney. Annual professional inspection is also recommended.
Smoke may enter the room due to insufficient draft, a clogged chimney, or opening the door too quickly. Ensure the air control is open and wait a few moments before fully opening the door.
To replace the glass, first ensure the stove is cool. Remove the door, unscrew the glass retainers, carefully remove the broken glass, and insert a new glass panel. Reattach the retainers and reinstall the door.
The recommended clearance varies based on installation specifics but generally requires at least 12 inches from the sides and back. Always consult the manual and local regulations for precise requirements.
Ensure safe operation by following the manufacturer's guidelines, maintaining clearances, using a proper hearth pad, and installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the home. Regular maintenance is also crucial.
