Start by opening the air vents fully. Place crumpled newspaper and small kindling at the bottom. Light the newspaper, and once the kindling catches fire, add larger pieces of wood. Gradually adjust the air vents to control the burn rate.
Ensure that the chimney is clean and free from obstructions. Check that the air vents are open and the door seals are intact. Cold flues may need preheating with a small fire or a hairdryer directed up the flue.
Allow the stove to cool completely. Use a damp cloth and a specific wood stove glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive materials to prevent scratching. Regular cleaning will prevent buildup of soot and creosote.
Use well-seasoned hardwoods such as oak, maple, or birch, which have been dried for at least 6 months. Hardwoods burn hotter and longer and produce less creosote.
The chimney should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year, or more often if the stove is used frequently. Regular maintenance prevents chimney fires and ensures efficient stove operation.
Regularly clean the firebox, inspect door seals, and check for wear on the baffle plates. Ensure the air vents operate smoothly. Annually inspect the chimney and flue.
Ensure the stove is properly maintained, use seasoned hardwood, and keep the air vents adjusted correctly. Use a stove thermometer to monitor burn temperatures and avoid over-firing.
Inspect the door hinges and latch for wear or damage. Clean any debris or buildup around the door frame. If necessary, adjust or replace the door gasket to ensure a proper seal.
Check for a blocked chimney or flue. Ensure the room is adequately ventilated and the stove is not being overfired. Open the air control fully before opening the door to improve draft.
Burn seasoned hardwood, maintain a hot fire, and avoid smoldering fires. Regularly inspect and clean the chimney to prevent creosote accumulation.
