To adjust the caliper brakes, first loosen the bolt that holds the brake cable. Align the brake pads with the rim and tighten the bolt. Use the barrel adjuster to fine-tune the brake tension.
If your brakes are squeaking, clean the rims and brake pads with rubbing alcohol. Ensure the pads are toed in slightly, meaning the front of the pad touches the rim first.
Inspect your brake pads every month or before long rides. Replace them if the grooves are worn away or if you notice reduced braking performance.
To improve braking in wet conditions, ensure your brake pads are suitable for wet weather and clean your rims regularly. Consider using pads specifically designed for better grip in the rain.
The Trek 2018 Emonda SLR is compatible with Shimano-style caliper brake pads. Check for pads that are suitable for carbon or aluminum rims, depending on your wheelset.
Inspect your brake cables for fraying or corrosion. If you notice any damage or if braking feels spongy, it might be time to replace the cables.
For brake maintenance, you'll need an Allen wrench set, a cable cutter, a screwdriver, and possibly a torque wrench for precise adjustments.
To center the caliper brakes, loosen the mounting bolt slightly, align the caliper so that both pads are equidistant from the rim, then tighten the bolt to secure the caliper.
If your brake lever feels loose, check the cable tension using the barrel adjuster. Tighten the adjuster to increase tension, ensuring the lever engages the brakes properly.
To prevent brake fade on long descents, modulate your braking by applying brakes in intervals rather than continuously. Use both brakes to distribute heat evenly.
