The recommended oil for Perkins 1103D engines is a high-quality 15W-40 diesel engine oil that meets API CI-4 or ACEA E5 specifications.
The oil in a Perkins 1103D engine should be changed every 250 hours of operation or at least once a year, whichever comes first.
To bleed air from the fuel system, locate the fuel lift pump and open the bleed screw. Manually operate the fuel lift pump lever until fuel free of air bubbles flows from the bleed screw, then tighten the screw securely.
Check for coolant level, leaks, and ensure the radiator is clean. Verify the thermostat is functioning correctly and ensure the water pump is operational. Inspect the fan belt for proper tension and condition.
Signs of a failing fuel injector include rough idling, engine misfiring, increased fuel consumption, black smoke from the exhaust, and difficulty starting the engine.
Regular maintenance such as changing air filters, ensuring proper tire pressure, using the correct grade of fuel, and regular engine tune-ups can improve fuel efficiency.
Follow a maintenance schedule that includes checking and changing oil every 250 hours, replacing fuel filters every 500 hours, inspecting the air filter every 250 hours, and checking coolant levels regularly.
To reset the service light, consult the engine manual for specific instructions as it may vary depending on the equipment utilizing the engine. Generally, it involves a combination of key switch operations and button presses on the control panel.
To winterize, drain the cooling system and replace with antifreeze, change the oil and filter, disconnect and fully charge the battery, and store in a dry, sheltered area. Additionally, seal the air intake and exhaust to prevent moisture ingress.
To check valve clearance, remove the valve cover, rotate the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke for cylinder one, and use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the rocker arm and valve stem. Adjust as necessary according to specifications.
