To start the McCulloch M40–450 C, ensure the fuel tank is filled, the spark plug is connected, and the throttle lever is in the choke position. Pull the starter cord firmly until the engine starts.
Regular maintenance includes checking and cleaning the air filter, changing the oil, sharpening the blade, and inspecting the spark plug. Perform these tasks at least once per season.
If the mower doesn't start, check the fuel level, ensure the spark plug is clean and connected, verify the air filter is not clogged, and ensure the oil level is adequate.
Use SAE 30 oil for temperatures above 40°F (4°C) and SAE 10W-30 for temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
To adjust the cutting height, locate the height adjustment lever on each wheel, and move it to the desired position. Ensure all wheels are set to the same height.
After use, make sure the mower is turned off and cool. Use a brush to remove grass clippings from the deck and a damp cloth for the exterior. Avoid using water directly on the engine.
Excessive vibration may be due to a damaged blade, loose engine mounting bolts, or debris trapped under the deck. Inspect and resolve these issues to reduce vibration.
For winter storage, drain the fuel tank, change the oil, clean the mower thoroughly, and store it in a dry, covered location to prevent rust and corrosion.
If performance is poor, inspect the air filter and spark plug for dirt or damage, ensure the blade is sharp, and verify the carburetor is clean and adjusted properly.
To replace the blade, disconnect the spark plug, tilt the mower, and use a wrench to remove the bolt securing the blade. Replace with a new blade and tighten the bolt securely.
