To break in the engine, start by using a high-quality after-run oil. Run the engine at a rich setting for a few tanks of fuel, gradually leaning it out. Avoid full throttle during the first few runs to ensure proper seating of the internal components.
Post-race maintenance should include cleaning the chassis, checking for loose screws, inspecting the suspension components for wear, cleaning the air filter, and ensuring the drivetrain is properly lubricated.
To improve handling on loose dirt, consider adjusting the suspension by using softer springs, increasing the ride height slightly, and using tires designed for loose surfaces. Additionally, adjusting the differential oils to a lighter weight can help.
To adjust the slipper clutch, tighten it fully, then back off about 1/8 to 1/4 turn. Test the vehicle and make fine adjustments as necessary until the clutch slips slightly under heavy acceleration.
If the vehicle is not starting, check the glow plug for proper function, ensure there is fuel reaching the carburetor, check the battery for sufficient charge, and verify that the engine is not flooded.
Replace the air filter every 10-15 runs or if it appears damaged. Clean it by removing dust and debris with compressed air or washing it in soapy water, then apply a light coat of air filter oil before reinstallation.
Signs of a worn-out differential include unusual noises, inconsistent handling, or leakage. To service it, disassemble the differential, clean all components, inspect for wear, replace damaged parts, and refill with the appropriate oil.
To prevent overheating, ensure proper airflow to the engine, avoid running too lean, check for obstructions in the cooling fins, and consider using a heat sink or fan for additional cooling.
For wet conditions, use tires with deeper treads or spikes to improve traction. Soft compound tires can also provide better grip on slippery surfaces.
Adjust the camber by turning the upper camber link on the suspension arms. A slight negative camber is usually ideal for most tracks. Adjust the toe by altering the steering links; a slight toe-in can enhance stability and turn-in response.
