To thread the Singer 291U, start by raising the presser foot and placing the thread spool on the spool pin. Pull the thread through the thread guide, then down through the tension discs. Next, thread the take-up lever from right to left, and finally, thread the needle from front to back.
If the Singer 291U skips stitches, check if the needle is inserted correctly and is the right type for the fabric. Also, verify that the thread is properly threaded and the tension is adjusted correctly. Replace the needle if it is bent or dull.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning lint from the feed dog and bobbin area, oiling the machine as per the manual, and checking the needle for wear. Always unplug the machine before performing maintenance.
Thread breakage can be caused by incorrect threading, incorrect needle size, or high tension settings. Re-thread the machine, check the needle, and adjust the tension as necessary. Ensure the thread quality is good.
To adjust the tension, turn the tension dial on the front of the machine. A higher number increases tension, while a lower number decreases it. Test on a scrap piece of fabric to achieve the desired stitch quality.
Check if the machine is properly plugged in and the power switch is turned on. Inspect the foot pedal and power cord for damage. If the problem persists, consult a professional technician.
To replace the needle, first turn off the machine. Loosen the needle clamp screw, remove the old needle, and insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back. Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.
Ensure the presser foot is down and the feed dogs are raised. Check if the stitch length is set correctly and clean any lint from the feed dog area. Verify the presser foot pressure is adequate for the fabric type.
Uneven stitches can be due to incorrect tension settings or improper threading. Re-thread the machine, adjust the tension, and check that the needle and thread are suitable for the fabric being sewn.
Use sewing machine oil specifically designed for sewing machines. Avoid using household oils or other lubricants as they may damage the machine. Apply oil according to the maintenance section of the manual.
