Polaris Sportsman 400 H.O, Sportsman 500 H.O Owner's Manual

Routine maintenance should be performed every 50 hours of operation or every 6 months, whichever comes first. This includes checking the oil, inspecting the brakes, and cleaning the air filter.
For optimal performance, it is recommended to use Polaris PS-4 Synthetic 4-Cycle Oil, which is designed specifically for Polaris ATVs.
If your ATV won't start, check the battery connections, ensure the fuel valve is on, and inspect the spark plug for wear or damage. Also, make sure the kill switch is in the 'run' position.
Overheating could be due to low coolant levels, a blocked radiator, or a malfunctioning thermostat. Check these components and ensure the cooling fan operates correctly.
Spongy brakes may indicate air in the brake lines or worn brake pads. Bleed the brakes to remove air and check the pads for wear, replacing them if necessary.
To change the air filter, remove the seat, open the airbox cover, and take out the old filter. Insert the new filter, ensuring it is seated properly, then replace the cover and seat.
Symptoms include clicking or popping noises when turning, vibration during acceleration, and grease leaks around the CV boot. Inspect and replace the CV joint if needed.
Maintain proper tire pressure, use recommended fuel, perform regular maintenance, and avoid carrying excessive weight to improve fuel efficiency.
Inspect the fuse box for blown fuses, check the bulb connections, and ensure the wiring harness is intact. Replace any faulty components.
To adjust the suspension, locate the preload adjusters on the shock absorbers. Turning them clockwise increases stiffness, while counterclockwise decreases it. Adjust according to load and terrain.
