To perform a factory reset on the Onkyo TX DS989, turn off the receiver. Then, while holding down the VCR1 button, press the Standby/On button. The display should show "Clear," indicating the receiver has been reset to factory settings.
Check if the speaker wires are properly connected to the receiver's speaker terminals. Ensure that the correct input source is selected and the volume is turned up. Also, verify that the Mute function is not enabled.
